Phases of the Moon

Today we learned about the phases of the moon.  Phases of the Moon means the different shapes of the moon that we see during different times of the month.  There are 8 phases in total but we learned about 4 today: New moon, first quarter, full moon, last quarter

We worked in small groups and were given four biscuits to represent the moon. We also had icing to demonstrate how much of the moon we could see during each of the different phases.

When it's a new moon it is very hard to see in the sky because their isn't a lot of sun shining on the moon.  To represent the new moon we didn't put any icing on the biscuit because that showed that we can't really see the new moon.

The next phase is the first quarter. This phase is funny because you can see more than quarter of the moon - you can see half of the moon. To represent this we spread some icing over half of our biscuit.

The next phase is the full moon. When it's a full moon you can see the whole moon. To represent this we spread icing over all of our biscuit.

The last phase that we learned about is the last quarter moon. During this phase you can see half of the moon - the half you couldn't see during the first quarter moon. To represent this we spread icing over the other half of our biscuit.
